Income Tax Medical Deductions

Question: Medical Tax Deductions ?
I know you can claim any amount of medical costs that exceed 7.5% of your gross income but – does that medical cost include the amount of money that is taken out of your paycheck each month from your employer to pay for health insurance. I looked on google a lot but havent seen anything that specifically says that it does. (although i assume it does).
Also on the same topic, i know you can claim the cost of modifying a car to accomidate a wheel chair. i.e. adding a wheelchair lift or ramp. But lets say you dont have the car yet and buy one that allready has a ramp/lift. Can you claim the entire cost of the 40,000$ van? HA! i assume not. But if not how do you figure the cost of the ramp/lift part of the car to claim just that part? (without getting audited the following year). Thanks – hope someone knows more on this than I.
Answer: 1) Generally, No. That amount usually comes out of your paycheck “pretax” so you have already received the tax benefit. In the highly unlikely event that it is deducted after tax, then you could deduct it.
2) Entire cost? No. However, you can deduct the difference between what the ramp installed van cost and what a non-ramp installed van would have cost.

Tax Deduction Medical Expenses

Question: Medical Tax Deduction Questions?
Hi. I am hoping to deduct my medical expenses from my taxes. I just have a few questions. Can I deduct medical expenses from seeing a psychotherapist who is licensed but not necessarily a psychiatrist or psychologist? I paid (pay) 90-100 a session and went to numerous sessions. Also is the price I paid for my actual insurance each month included in the medical expenses. Does it make it a difference if my employer deducted my medical insurance costs vs. me paying them directly for tax purposes? And finally I had lasik done, can I deduct the entire amount?
Answer: You can deduct any medical expenses you pay to cure or fix problems as long as you do not get reimbursed for your expenses (say you pay, then file claim with insurance company, and they pay you back).
You should be able to deduct your payments for seeing a psychologist and having lasik done.
For your employer provided insurance deducted from your paycheck, you need to find out if those deductions were made pretax or after tax. If it is pretax, then you cannot deduct them. If after tax, then you can deduct them.
Ask HR/payroll how your insurance is paid or go to www.paycheckcity.com and find the personal calculator. Enter the relevant info and check the boxes to try to duplicate your paycheck to see if your insurance was pre or post tax. Most deductions for insurance from employment are pretax and not deductible.

Question: Can I deduct California use tax as a medical expense?
I itemize my personal income tax every year. I deduct lots of medical expenses every year because I am disabled. I buy stuff out of state and country. I have to pay use taxes on these medical purchases because they are out of state and country and are shipped to me. Can I deduct the use tax as a medical expense/deduction too? This question is for the year 2009. I will be deducting the sales tax for all purchases I’ve made this year in state as taxes already paid. I’m not sure if use tax is included in that particular deduction. Any help would be appreciated.
I keep extremely good records and receipts.Answer: If you maintain detailed records of all of your medical expense purchases and can show where the use tax that you paid applies, you should not have any problem in applying these use tax payments to your purchases of medical supplies from out of state sources. However, be forewarned, the burden of proof rests upon your shoulders, the IRS will automatically assume that you are incorrect unless you can prove otherwise through detailed records of all of your purchases.
