Deductible Home Expenses

Question: Are moving expenses from storage to a new home tax deductible?
I moved from KY to WI a few months ago as my wife and I both started new jobs. We’ve had our belongings in storage while looking for a new home and finally found one. We’re planning to move next month and I want to know if the moving expenses from storage to the new house are deductible. I read the IRS publication and I meet the time and distance criteria. It says moving of personal property is deductible but I’m not sure if its a one time trip only (i.e. from KY to storage only) or if it includes all moving expenses until we move into our new home. Thanks for your help…
Answer: Your long-term storage is not deductible. But the costs of moving the contents from storage to your home is part of your moving expenses. Add it to the costs of moving your belongings from KY to the WI storage location.
When you figure your deduction, treat both legs of the move as one move.

Question: What can I itemize (deduct) from my income tax?
I know I can deduct the interest I paid on my mortgage but can I deduct home improvement expenses? Also, is the deduction cut-off still $10,000? I mean, we tried to deduct things before but our tax guy told us that unless we had $10,000 in deductions, we couldn’t deduct anything. Is this still the case? We have done alot of projects to the house this year and if you include the mortgage interest, we have about $12,500 in deductions. Can I itemize this year? Any tax gurus please advise. Thanx!
Answer: No, not home improvements, those are on your nickel, but you can deduct mortgage interest and real estate taxes. But save the receipts – if you owe any tax when you sell the house, they’ll save you taxes then.
There are many other things that can be deducted, but the interest and taxes all are the deductions for your house. If you made any charitable contributions, those are Itemized Deductions. Download 1040 schedule A and its instructions to see what else you might be able to deduct. For medical and dental, note that you can only deduct the amount that exceeds 7.5% of your income, and very few people reach that amount unless the have no insurance and a horrible year.
If you don’t itemize, then you get a standard deduction, which for 2008 is $10,900 for a married couple. If your total itemized deductions aren’t more than that, you’re ahead to take the standard deduction.

Question: I claim a percentage of my tips, but they took all that i claimed out of my tips is that legal?
I worked 2 weeks, claimed a percentage of tips, my check ended up being $115, Garnish and $85 deduction of tips, is that legal, i thought they taxed it and didn’t take everything out
Answer: You are legally required to claim ALL of your tips, not just some % of them.
What happens then is that they add the tip amount to your wages to get the total that you made, calculate the taxes, then subtract them back out since you already got the money. If you look at your whole pay stub you’ll see them added in toward the top.
