Question: How do I deduct Tax and NI from my wages?

I applied for a job on www.write4money.co.uk, but in the terms and conditions it says

■You will be personally liable for your own Tax Deductions and all National Insurance contributions

Since employers have always done this for me, I have no idea where to start. What do I do? How much do I subtract? Who do I pay it to?

Answer: It’s not a “job” – your employers are avoiding their resposibilities by hiring you as a self employed contractor rather than as an employee. You will need to register with the Tax Office as self employed and you will have to pay a flat rate NI contribution monthly or quarterly and complete a tax return annually to establish your liability to income tax and a profit related NI contribution. Depending upon your level of income these liabilities will be paid annually (if low) or six monthly (if higher). Bear in mind also that as a self employed contractor your employer is also avoiding most of their responsibilities under the employment legislation so you won’t get paid holidays, sick pay, etc

Question: tax return – deductions?

hey there

I’m international student working in a hotel as a casual F&B Attendant. I also study Advance Diploma of hospitality. I was wondering what I can claim this year. I heard that I cannot claim the petrol since I don’t travel between jobs. I had to buy uniform, entry card and till card so I guess I can deduct that. I’m gonna claim laundry and maybe shoes. Does anybody know what else I can claim?

Last year I earned less than $12,000 and when I was using calculator from the gov website it showed me that I have low income tax offset (less $1,500). Does it mean that i do not have to worry about deductions and I will get all tax back?

thanksssss

Answer: If you have not been re-imbursed by your company you can claim:
1. Cost of uniform
2. Cost of protective clothing
3. Cost of laundry
4. Mobile phone costs – if you make calls on your mobile for them

However, you may not need to claim expenses as it looks like you are under the threshold for income tax and thefore entitled to all your tax back.

Good luck!
