Question: I need to amend my 2009 taxes to claim the first time home buyer tax credit.?

Can I send in my Form 1040ez (filled with HR Block Software), Form 1040x, Form 5405, and my HUD-1? I read somewhere that you cannot claim the FTHB credit with a 1040ez but I didn’t know if that was referring only to an initial refund and not an amended refund.

Answer: 1040 X and it will be manual since you need to send background documents with it
if you already filed a 1040EZ you don’t need to send another one, do not, ever send a return you already filed, the only way is by 1040X

Question: Turbotax or Taxcut for 2010 and why? Which one will get me a bigger refund?

Answer: Smartperson -

Assuming you enter the same information in those packages, or HR block or any others, you will get the exact same result. A CPA, or going into HR block, Jackson Hewitt, etc. will all yield the exact same answer. It’s all a matter of whether you use the software correctly to take advantage of some of the deductions you may not know about. “Real people”, (i.e., CPA’s), are better positioned to analyze your tax situation to do this.

And, there are many CPA’s online that you can use. Plus, CPA’s are probably the most knowledgeable in terms of tax law and regulations and during this time of year, many charge extremely competitive rates – sometimes better than HR / JH or the software packages. In fact, the one I use (linked below) each year only charges around $50 for my return – it’s really a great deal compared to the other guys
