500 Deductible

Question: How does a deductible work for car insurance?

I was driving home from work and I was already in my apartment parking garage and about to park my van when I do not know how when I turned right I heard a horrible noise. The right rear part was hit by a wall and now my beautiful black van has a lot of white scratches. I pay full coverage and the collission coverage pays up to $20000 but it says that there is a $500 deductible. Do I have to pay that amount even if labor costs less then that? or I have to pay the $500 only if the cost of fixing the van is more than $20000. What do I have to say when reporting the accident?

Answer: You would have to pay the first $500 of any repairs, and then your insurance would cover beyond that, up to $20,000.

You should tell them just what happened. You were parking and accidentally struck the wall and damaged the the back of the vehicle.

If the cost of repairs is going to be less than your deductable, you’d be better off not even telling them since it could raise your rates.

Deductible Comprehensive

Deductible Comprehensive

Question: Insurance deductible, can I get out of paying for being hit while legally parked?

My parked car was hit by a van being guided by an unlicensed/uninsured driver. I am now facing a $1000 deductible, though I have liability/comprehensive coverage through AIG. Perfect driving record and hit while parked. Is there a way to avoid paying the 1000 and get my car repaired? The motorist makes $950 per month and the co[ps tell me I can only attempt to sue him civilly. I can’t get money from an empty well

Answer: I’m terribly sorry, but you do have to pay the deductible. Life is a bit unfair at times, I know. I would definitely still try to get the money back from the culprit. You may not get it all in one lump sum, but at least you can get it in the end.

Do you know how much the damages were? If they aren’t much more than the thousand dollars, I would just pay the whole thing yourself, even if you have to charge it and don’t make a claim. You don’t have to claim it on your own insurance if it isn’t to your advantage to do so. With the increase you are likely to have in your premiums, it might not be worth it.

Well, I’m glad you weren’t in the car and injured. :-)

MORTON KONDRACKE: Two smart governors suggest `incremental’ health care reform

In the spirit of bipartisanship supposedly inspiring a recent Blair House health care summit, I thought I’d seek advice from a knowledgeable group unfortunately not represented – the nation’s governors.
