Tax Deduction Maintenance

Tax Deduction Maintenance

Question: Is there a federal tax deduction for homeowner’s association dues?

I live in a condominium and I pay about $220 monthly for dues to the homeowner’s association. The association is completely independent and represents the 115 units on the property. The dues also cover the water, sewer and garbage services in addition to landscaping, exterior maintenance, etc.
Can I deduct my association dues for the year?
Thanks!

Answer: No – Not Tax Deductible at all. You wouldn’t deduct what you spend on lawn or pool service – this is the same thing.

Tax Deduction Home Office

Tax Deduction Home Office

Question: Home Office Tax Deduction as a Sole Proprietor (1099 Income)?

I own a business and I use a portion of my home as office space. Utilities are tax-deductible, but the electric bill comes in my mother’s name. My Question is this: Am I able to deduct that expense if can provide proof that it was paid for by me and that it was for electricity at the address that the home office is located? I understand how to calculate how much the deduction amount would be for, but I just wanted to make sure I could.

Thanks!

Answer: It is one of those gray areas of the tax business. Although the utilities are under your mother’s name, I imagine that you are living at the place of residence and paying some of the expenses. If you can provide proof of payment (canceled checks, money order, on-line printout, etc.) then you should be OK. Also, realize that the utilities are pro-rated for the amount of space – meaning if the office only represents 10% of the total home space, then you can only deduct 10% of the utility costs.

Hsa Contribution Deductible

Question: My wife has an HSA with a $5000 deductible. I have an IRA account. Can I roll over my IRA to her HSA?

The maximum contribution to a single-person HSA is $3,000, and my IRA is worth more than that. I’ve read that the IRS allows a one-time rollover from an IRA to an HSA without taxes or penalties, but if it’s MY IRA and HER HSA, does that still qualify? Thanks. I have the IRA check in my hand, but I figured I’d check and make sure this is legal before I deposit it into her HSA. Thanks.

Answer: No. You might be able to roll it into YOUR HSA, but not another person’s.
