Tax Standard Deduction 2008
Question: I need help with 2008 taxes?!?
I am trying to see if we will break even this year or if we are going to get a refund for our 2008 taxes. Our total gross wages so far this year together (married) is $73,200. Our federal taxes this year so far is $7912. How can I calculate if we get a refund. No contributions to IRA or anything like that and we would just use a standard deduction. Only contributed $500 towards and Flexible Spending Account. Are we going to have to pay?
Do you have to subtracted the standard deduction (i think it’s 10,900) from our gross and that is our amount for our tax bracket?! Help please!
Answer: 73200
- $500 fsa
- 10,900
- 7000 (for 2 exemptions)
= 54800.See IRS pub 1040ES for the tax table. Some of your income is taxed at 10%, most of it at 15%. I think you are probably looking at a $500 refund.

Phillips: Sales tax break doesn’t apply to all car buyers
Q: I understand we can deduct sales tax on any vehicle purchased in 2009 up to $40K. Before I begin figuring taxes, are Tennesseans able to also deduct this extra tax since we already can deduct “regular” sales tax? If not, can the auto sales tax be included elsewhere on our return? Finally, does this amount come off the adjusted income or the percentage tax rate under which we fall?

Tax Deduction On Mortgage

Question: Impact if mortgage interest tax deduction was abolished?
Economically speaking, what would the LONG TERM (after the dust settles) effect be if the tax deduction for mortgage interest were removed?
Answer: The principal benefit of the mortgage interest tax deduction is a cash flow bonus at fiscal year-end, which indicates that those wishing to purchase property would have to establish a stronger cash flow in order to do so, thus decreasing the volume of sales in the housing market.
It is nearly impossible to tell the overall result this would have on housing prices (a slowdown in increase, or an actual downward pressure) or on mortgage rates (ditto), because of the complexities of both markets.
The only certain result would be a decrease in activity in the housing market, and likely a decrease in charitable deductions (since these are of little tax benefit to people who don’t enjoy the mortgage interest deduction).
I’d like to think there’d be a drastic increase in affordability of housing, but I think too many structural shifts (size of housing, ease of use of infrastructure for commuting, etc) would have to take place for this result to occur.

Deductibles And Coinsurance
Question: Does anyone have the Mid-West Live insurance company of Tennessee?
An insurance agent sold this to my parents and I wish they put everything into layman’s term.
They bought this through a group called the Alliance for Affordable Services.
They have a $5000 deductible but the policy reads like this:
Hospital room/board has CoInsurance of 100% with Maximum up to $1000 per day.
What is Coinsurance? Do they still have to pay something after their $5000 deductible? Thanks in advance.
Answer: YES. If the hospital is $5,000/day they’ll have to pay $4,000 per day since their policy only covers $1,000.
Tell them to find another policy. They are owned by Health Markets which used to be UICI which also owns Mega Life and NASE. The policies between Mega and Mid-West are practically identical. And if you do a search for “Nase Complaints” you’ll find plenty of reasons to get rid of the policy.
Read this page on my site…it’s mostly about NASE because they’re more well known, but I have copies of the Mid-West brochure too…

Bottom line is they bought a ‘hospital/surgical’ plan with very limited benefits. They didn’t buy a major medical policy. AND, most importantly for the same or less money they could have bought a much better plan.
