Question: How do I report to the IRS an organization engaging in political activity but claims donations tax deductible?
I found an organization that is engaging in political activity but claims on its web site that donations to it are tax-deductible. I do not believe the IRS would see things this way. Is there any way I can expose this to the IRS for their action? Would I need to contribute to this organization first in order to have grounds to report them or sue?
Their political activity is for a particular political party. I’m not exactly sure which way to go because I’m not sure if they are a 501(c)3. If they are, then I assume their 501(c)3 status is in jeopardy. If not, then their web site misleads donors into believing contributions are tax-deductible when probably they are not. I assume this would never even be discovered unless a donor were to be audited by the IRS.
Answer: You should check with the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney Generals Office in your state. They should be able to tell you if this is a legally registered nonprofits. Many nonprofits do political action such as the Heritage Foundation, Acorn and the donations are deductible.
