Question: Are pro bono services for a non-profit organization tax deductible or charitable?
I am starting out as an independent contractor who has been asked by some local churches and charities to do some work for them. I like to do work for these organizations pro bono.
My question is, can I deduct the amount of what I would normally charge them on my taxes? Or can I declare that amount as a charitable contribution?
Of course, I’d provide proof and documentation of these organizations’ non-profit status, as well as services performed and I would establish the cost of my services by comparing non-profit invoices against invoices of for-profit organizations to show I wasn’t gouging or cheating my taxes.
Input is welcome.
Answer: No.
Per IRS rules, time has no value.
You may deduct any indirect expenses related to the work (mileage, supplies, etc.), but you may not take a deduction for your time.
