Standard Deduction 2008 Federal
Question: Non resident tax question?
In 2008 I lived & worked in Nevada the entire year but i never gave my employer my NV I.D. so they have me working with my California I.D. as i moved from CA in December 2007. My W-2 i got taxed in CA. for 2008 eventhough i did not live or work there. In Nevada we do not have state tax returns only federal. So Is all i have to do is file a NV federal return & a California non resident state tax return so i can get a refund of the $ Ca. took from me?
Is there a penalty for this?
btw i am single with no dependents & filing under standard deduction.
any difference between a NV & CA tax rate?
Answer: Dear Bel: Look at your W2 near the bottom and see if CA is listed. If it is file CA as non-resident and you will get your money back or an IOU. If CA doesn’t get a budget passed the state will be issuing IOU’s until they have some money in the budget. NV is a non tax state so the only other form will be the federal income tax 1040EZ. NO penalty.
